I tried several 2.1 speaker systems to enhance the sound from our LCD HDTV. The 2.1 speaker systems used the RCA audio output from the TV but I was never satisfied with the quality of the sound, even from the Bose Companion system. I think part of the problem is with the low-level output of the TV’s RCA audio connection and for this reason I decided to look for a speaker system that could take advantage of my HDTV’s digital optical audio output connection. I also didn’t want to have a five-speaker system all around the room and so I focused my search on soundbar-type systems. The Sony HT-CT100, just recently introduced, fit the bill perfectly and comes at a price much lower than the Yamaha and Philips soundbar systems with optical inputs.
The Sony HT-CT100 produces great sound. The speaker bar is very low profile and takes up very little space whether you sit it in front of the TV or hang it on the wall. The subwoofer is large (about the size of a desktop PC) and sits on the floor. The subwoofer has a nice display along the top edge of the box to tell you the various system settings. Best of all, the 200 watt amplifier (built-in to the subwoofer) has multiple HDMI and optical audio inputs and acts as the control center for a complete home theater/sound system. This was an unexpected bonus -no need for a separate home theater receiver. Just plug your satellite system, DVD player(s), game consoles, etc. right into the HT-CT100 and control everything from the remote. It’s an elegant solution and I haven’t seen anything else quite like it. Since the system takes in digital video/audio directly, you get to enjoy full Dolby Digital surround sound. The system can belt out remarkable volume levels and rich, deep bass. The speaker bar has left, right, and center channel speakers along with the remote control IR sensor. The Sony remote supplied with the system will control all your Sony components; however, if your HDTV, DVD player(s), etc. are not Sony brand (like mine), then be prepared to buy a universal learning remote in order to program the HT-CT100 commands. While I can decipher having several remote controls, I prefer to use a single remote control so that my family has an easier time turning on the TV or watching DVDs.
The price of the Sony soundbar system is very reasonable considering its power output and multiple digital video/audio inputs to control your home theater. The quality is impressive (though I did have to return my first system due to a soundbar speaker buzz -my second system is flawless) and it looks and sounds like high-end gear. When I shop for items like this, I look at features, quality, and price without regard to the brand. In this case, Sony simply has a product that works great and provides an elegant solution for those wanting home theater sound in a low-profile package. It’s a winner.
For my needs, this pseudo surround sound solution is perfect. I did not want to run wires all over my house, or feed them through the walls or floor, etc. Nor did I want some flaky wireless rear speaker 5.1 solution.
I wanted something simple, elegant, with as few wires as possible. I have the Samsung LN52A550 television, and wanted something to complement it well. I looked at the Samsung HT-X810 2.1 soundbar with the integrated upscaling DVD player for compatibility sake, but it was too large and way to expensive ($600 and no blu-ray?!).
The Sony CT-100 works great so far. The small, unassuming speaker fits perfectly under my LCD panel and it complements it well. The subwoofer reminds me of a PC tower, but I love the fact that it includes three (3) HDMI inputs. I routed my HD cable box and an upscaling Sony DVD player into it.
At first, I found some of the vocal dialogue sound from 5.1 sources a bit muted, but I tweaked the system to my liking (+4 center speaker; -3 subwoofer; Movie soundfield), and this seems to fix the problem right up.
All in all, this won’t replace a true 5.1 system, but the right and left simulated surround sound works surprisingly well. Then again, I have a family room on the average to small side, and this system might work better in these types of environments.
All in all, this is exactly the system I was looking for – it’s simple, sounds good, and looks good.

I still enjoy the system, and think it was worth the $299, but I have found that to really enjoy the system, you must be directly in front of the speaker. If you are off the the side, it sometimes gets a bit hard to hear dialogue. In fact, I still think the dialogue gets a bit muted through these speakers. If there is any ambient noise aruond you (e.g. a fan, a/c unit, etc.) it can really affect the sound output quality.
Summary: Good value for the price and a big improvement over TV speakers, but surround effect is weak and there are some limitations in connectivity, subwoofer placement, remote control and audio settings.
I wanted something that would provide improved TV and DVD sound as well as streamed iTunes music without investing a lot of money. This system fills those requirements very well. The sound has a satisfying richness and depth, although the “surround” effect is weak. More like being surrounded on 3 sides, which is pretty much the norm for systems without real rear speakers. To their credit, Sony did not try to mask this limitation by adding reverb effects at ridiculous levels like some systems I’ve heard.
I’m happy with my choice, but if you are contemplating buying this system you should be aware of some of its limitations:
Connectivity-
There are 4 A/V inputs. Three can be connected via either HDMI (video & audio) or digital optical cable (audio). The SAT input also has a Coax jack. The TV audio can be connected via either RCA jacks or digital optical cable. The ports are labeled TV, BD, DVD and SAT, but any of them can be used for anything. Which is a good thing, because I need RCA jacks for the iTunes music input from my Airport Express so I use the TV input for this and the SAT input for the TV.
An additional limitation for audio is that the HDMI audio passed to the TV is inactive if the connected DVD or other device is set to output Dolby 5.1 or DTS audio. Unless you forego Dolby sound you don’t have the option of just using the TV speakers for playing DVDs. You also have to turn on and set the Sony system to get DVD sound. This is not a problem for me, but is for less technophyllic members of the household.
Subwoofer placement-
If you are going to place the subwoofer next to a TV stand, it can only go on the right (facing the TV) because of the placement of the speaker on the side of the subwoofer.
The amplifier is built in to the Subwoofer cabinet, so it must have a clear line of sight to the remote control, and you have to be able to see the display on the front of the unit to tell which mode you are in. No hiding the subwoofer.
Remote control-
The remote control is not a “universal” remote and cannot control any other components other than newer model Sony TVs and DVDs with the “Bravia” system.
Audio Settings-
There is no equalizer or even the ability to directly set the bass/treble balance. Indirectly this is affected by the choice of “sound field”. The choices are Standard, Movie, Music, Sports, Game and P-Audio, all of which have different mixes of surround effect/stereo separation, bass/treble balance and reverb. You can also adjust the relative loudness of the center speaker and the subwoofer. However, these adjustments affect all sound fields, and getting it right for, say, Music may result in way too much subwoofer for Movie.
The overall sound volume is adequate for my 11′ x 20′ TV room, but the maximum output may not be sufficient for large rooms.

I was looking for a sound system to compliment my new flat screen TV ,not wanting cables running all over the place I came across the LG Home Cinema System ,not only is it a superb 2.1 ch sound system it is also blu ray built in ipod docking station ,it has FM radio also.
The sound quality is great ,powerful sub woofer and the smaller speakers ,hefty in weight provide great sound all round .
I have only had the volume up to 15 and the quality is crisp and great to watch blu ray movies on .
The ipod feature is a plus the unit recognises it and allows you to veiw your library and choose the track you require .
It was easy to install and minimal cable work so thats a plus for the techno phobes amongst us.
All in all I would recommend this system to anyone that wants a well priced stylish looking suberb sounding home sound system packed full of useful features .

This little system has great performance and plenty of options for connectively, although I am having problems connecting my Xbox through the blueray using the HDMI input. LG customer help do not seem to know what an Xbox is and do not seem to understand the product, but I am sure we will get to the bottom of it soon. I highly recommend this product

It is a big player – bigger than I expected, but not as loud as I expected. Despite the lack of big volume, the bass is very growly most of the time – normal dialogue or interviews sound as if an alien space battleship is about to burst in on the scene; great for sci fi, but not for Newsnight. On the plus side it has clean looks and is easy to use. Bought to enhance the sound of my excellent LG 32″ TV. With hindsight, the TV sound is OK and I wish I had just bought a blu ray player without the home cinema gubbins.

Easy to set up out of the box, just plug your sky+HD box or whatever into either of the input HDMI and the ouput HDMI into the TV select your source and away you go
Picture and sound are very good
Blu-Ray tray is a little fragile, my 1 year old will make mincemeat of it if/when she manages to get it open. She is attracted by the big blue light on the volume swithch which fortunately you can turn off and fiddles with the buttons.
Nothing is perfect but for the money this is very good for the home, if I can keep Georgie away !!

A large heavy box arrived to my door step. Inside the box everything was well protected and wrapped.
Set up was painless after running my own speaker wires and not the thin ones that came with the system.
I found the manual to be fairly understandable and quickly programmed in the codes for my various components and TV.
Upon power up, first thing was to test out the AM/FM.
AM antenna was what I expected. Cheap plastic that sort of does the job. FM antenna connected easily and gave a decent signal. The unit produced some very nice sound at the high and low levels.
Then it proceeded to blow my mind away as I watched a few movies on the Satelite and then the Blue Ray.
Holy moly. I cannot believe what I was missing. The sound was amazing. Felt like I was in the theater.
The deep powerful bass from the subwoofer is incredible. When an explosion occurred on screen, I litterally felt the shock waves in my seat, and body. Amazing.
Soon spacecrafts were zipping through the living room. They were flying right overhead from front to back and back to front. Left to right. I was in the movie. Not watching it.
The Ipod dock is great.
My kids are now getting a taste of how music is meant to be listened to. So much nicer than with buds stuck in your ears.
The universal remote controls so many more features on my TV and Blue Ray than I had figured it would.
I am very happy with this system. I’m looking for things to complain about.
I did read in other reviews about not being able to have true 7.1 due to the pass through HDMI.
The optical audio cables seem to have this covered. Full 7.1 is what I read and seems to be what I am hearing. So go that route rather than the cable with the RCA jacks.
Speaker cabinets are decent quality with a nice black stain on the wood.
The sound is spectacular.
Subwoofer has a built in volume control so you can adjust it if the bass is too much.
Balancing the speakers was easy with the plug in microphone. I set it up where I normally sit and it did all the work figuring out the best setting for the acoustics of my room. This took about 15 minutes. Would have been shorter if not for noisy kids…
Not sure what to complain about. If I find something, I will update this.

Great Sound for Price – Zoogie – Florida
I finally took this out of the box to hook up to my Television and Blu-Ray player. I looked around for quite a few months before deciding to purchase this particular HTIB. It took awhile to hook up only because I had to install some speaker mounts in my ceiling first. The speakers are a good size. They come labeled and color coded to make setup a breeze. The included setup mic ensures that the sound is perfect for whatever room you need. The wires for the Surround and Back speakers are 30 feet long and and the front are 10. They both left lots of room to adjust placement of my speakers. There are 3 HDMI inputs on the back which was my main reason for purchasing this system. I wanted to make sure I had enough hookups.
As for the audio…..I love it. I hooked my Blu-Ray player up via HDMI(of course) and used an optical cable for the audio. I played the Dark Knight and it gave me the same feeling when I saw it in the theater. The bank scene is wonderful. You hear all the echos and sounds. The huge subwoofer provides great bass. I have no complaints at all about this system. There is a colorful quick setup guide for those who already know the basics of hooking up a home theater. The instructions in the book are very detailed and informational. I can’t wait to hear what else this system has to offer once I hook up the Sirius radio.

All I expected ,thanks to the reviews it is all I expected and I usually expect allot. The sound is fantastic and the directions are perfectly written out. My hook up is all HDMI and coax cable.The sound quality is fantastic.
Great system for the price – em34744 –
Like many others, I rely on the reviews to make my buying purchases online. The reviews for this product (Onkyo HT-S5200) have been pretty dead on.
It’s a great price for the 7.1 system and delivers great sound quality. We didn’t really need a 7.1 system (only 5.1) due to the prewired locations in our living room, but we wound up hooking all 7 speakers up anyway by mounting the front speakers on the wall next to our wall-mounted flat screen. Our other 4 surround speakers are ceiling mounted with 2 in the front and 2 in the back and it provides good sound. Probably would be better had 2 of the surround speakers been mounted in the middle of the room as recommended, but we went with what was already wired.
We did purchase heavier gauge speaker wire because we felt the wires that were included were a little cheap. Probably would do the job just fine, but when you spend this kind of money (0+) you want to make sure you get the best sound quality.
Also, others mentioned needing optical cables to get sound. We didn’t need them. We have directv (non-hd), bluray, lcd hdtv and this receiver and all hooked up fine without optical cables. We did use rca hookups to be able to watch tv (from satellite) without having to have the receiver on…didn’t want to overheat it or overuse it. We purchased optical cables (through Amazon from Bargain Cell – don’t spend the money at the box stores for your hdmi or optical cables it’s a waste) but never used them. Since they were only it’s not a big deal, and maybe we’ll need them in the future.
Overall, very satisfied! And the price on Amazon (through OneCall) was better than anywhere else we found.

The sound quality is excellent compared to any other systems out there for this money. The powered sub-woofer literally shakes the ground. It’s a solid, heavy system made out of good material. The receiver is not just a plastic box, its pretty solid. The only disappointment I have with this particular receiver is that the HDMI doesn’t transfer audio, so I was forced to use an optical cable to achieve the digital audio quality. As far as I know optical cable can pass only 5.1 surround sound, not 7.1. So I think the receiver converts the 5.1 to 7.1 internally.
I know onkyo makes receivers which can transfer both HD video and audio through HDMI, but it’s not the receiver comes with this package. Other than that, its an excellent home theater system.

I was just loking for a good deal to compliment a flat screen tv.
I came across this average looking ad with not so flattering pictures
and rather vague descriptions of the product but a sale price that majorly influenced my purchase. What I recieved was the home theater sleeper of the decade this richly styled and with unbelievably meticulously crafted stands and speekers , I just can not contain my shock at its pure beauty. oh and then I wired it up and turned it on there is a 350 watt output I’m expecting that to dissapoint but wow
my house starts trembeling small animals live in fear Wow and what rich and penetrating sound pours from the flat panneld wonders surrounding me.

Bad Sound Quality/Effect – Ama – NY

Cons : bad sound quality;
This is very nice looking home theatre than most of current market home theatre systems. Looks beautiful and attractive, outside finishing is ver nice, nicer than my Panasonic system.
However the biggest drawback is the sound quality which is the principal functionality for this item.
Bass is muffled and blurred, tremble is very unclear and harsh. It could not even match with my existing very cheap home shelf systems .
Let along if you compare with Polk system, then it is almost unbearable to have it stayed at home, I returned thme immediately.
Only beautiful looking is far not enough for an audio system, Pioneer should pay more attension to sound quality rather than the outlooking appearance, it is waste time purchase for me.

I didn’t expect much when this surround system was on sale online because I never heard of flat speaker surround system. Boy was I surprise. The built quality, style is pure beauty. Sound quality is excellent though it can take use to since I’ve was use to the old school magnetic speakers. The speaker have that titanium metallic looks to it. If you have IKEA furnitures, this system will compliments it. For it’s price, It is better in quality and looks to alot of surround systems out there at Best Buy or Frys. The only con is that there isn’t alot of rca inputs just 1 digital coax in , 1 rca in, and 2 digital in. Setup is very easy because the wires are color coated.

If you have a Plasma or LCD TV with a piano-black bezel, as is so popular in recent product lines, and if installation of a full 5.1 surround system or better is going to be difficult or is inappropriate for your room layout, then I highly recommend this. Admittedly the audio from this 2.1 system doesn’t have the depth of the 5.1 system I replaced with it, however it is far less ugly and doesn’t give a horrible background buzz that I previously had to live with. And to be fair with the Dolby-VS feature switched on and a DVD playing the sound is good enough for me. I mainly use it to play back AVI files off a USB stick, and must say the picture quality produced is far superior to my old Silvercrest USB-enabled player. The best thing is probably that it integrates well via HDMI-CEC with my new Panasonic TP37X10B TV, meaning it automatically switches on with the TV and plays my TV audio output. The TV remote (and Sky remote, programmed to my TV) can be used to control the volume, making it the perfect upgrade to my TV’s own audio.
